Persian calligraphy artwork by Somayeh Gholami

Description: Beyond the Seas There Is a Town is a black-and-white Kufic calligraphy painting inspired by the poetry of the Iranian poet Sohrab Sepehri. In this work, combinations of Kufic letters are transformed into the structure of a wooden bridge extending across the beach toward the sea.

The geometric language of Kufic calligraphy becomes architectural, allowing the letters to form the boards and structure of the bridge. Set against a white background, the black calligraphic forms create a strong sense of direction and movement, leading the eye toward the horizon.

The bridge becomes a metaphor for passage and connection—between land and sea, the known and the unknown, and the present and somewhere beyond. Through the transformation of letters into landscape, the work connects the visual language of Kufic calligraphy with Sepehri’s poetic vision of distance, nature, and elsewhere.
