Persian calligraphy artwork by Somayeh Gholami

Description: Strong is a contemporary Kufic calligraphy painting built from the repetition of a single word: “Moalem” (Teacher). Written in different directions and interwoven across the surface, the word forms a dense, net-like structure rather than a conventional readable text.

The composition draws on the visual presence of protective and symbolic nets found in sacred places, such as the metal screens of shrines, as well as the nets and branches of trees where people tie pieces of fabric while making a wish. In this work, the repeated word becomes both a visual pattern and a symbol of connection, support, and hope.

The green tones of the acrylic ink suggest growth, life, and renewal. A single piece of red fabric is tied into the composition, recalling the act of making a wish and giving the work a personal and human dimension.

The title Strong refers to the person we turn to when we need guidance, support, or help—the teacher as a figure who gives strength and helps us move forward.
