Art and Calligraphy

Aga Khan Center, Lisbon, Portugal

January 2024

In January 2024, Somayeh Gholami led an art and calligraphy workshop at the Aga Khan Center in Lisbon, Portugal, designed for students over the age of 12 from the Ismaili community. The workshop introduced participants to the beauty and structure of Kufic calligraphy, one of the earliest forms of Islamic script, known for its geometric clarity and visual strength.

During the sessions, students explored both the Persian and Arabic alphabets, learning how these writing systems can be transformed into artistic compositions through the Kufic style. The workshop combined cultural education with hands-on practice, encouraging participants to experiment with form, balance, and creativity while developing their own calligraphic works.

This educational experience aimed to inspire young participants to engage with the artistic heritage of Islamic calligraphy, fostering an appreciation for its historical significance and its potential within contemporary art and design.
