Persian calligraphy artwork by Somayeh Gholami

Description: This contemporary Kufic calligraphy composition is built around the word “Hoo” (هو), meaning “He”, traditionally used in a spiritual context to refer to God. The work transforms the Arabic letterforms of the word into a visual composition, moving beyond the function of readable writing toward abstraction, rhythm, and form.

Created on paper, the composition explores how a single sacred word can become a visual presence. Through the geometric character of Kufic calligraphy, the letters are treated as structural elements, allowing the spiritual meaning of the word to coexist with its visual qualities.

The work reflects my contemporary approach to Kufic calligraphy, in which letters become shapes, patterns, and spaces while retaining their connection to language, spirituality, and cultural memory.
