Persian calligraphy artwork by Somayeh Gholami

Description: Unharmed by Turmoil is a contemporary Kufic calligraphy painting conceived as a single work divided into two parts. Although the two pieces belong to the same composition, the work is intentionally broken at the centre to express a moment of disruption and crisis.

The painting is constructed through the repetition of the word “Man” (من), meaning “I” in Persian. The word is written in different directions and repeated across the surface, creating a strong and structured geometric composition. Through this repetition, the individual word becomes part of a larger visual system, transforming Persian writing into an abstract calligraphic form.

At the centre of the work, a massive accumulation of ink creates a dense and turbulent area. This concentrated mass represents a major problem or crisis—an overwhelming force strong enough to disturb the structure of the composition and ultimately cause the central break.

Despite this disruption, the two sides retain their visual strength and relationship to one another. The work represents a person who remains constant, firm, and determined in life, refusing to change their essential character even when confronted with difficult circumstances.

The title, Unharmed by Turmoil, refers to this inner stability: the ability to pass through turbulence without losing one’s identity or fundamental direction.

Through contemporary Kufic calligraphy, Persian letterforms, repetition, abstraction, and the physical tension of the broken composition, the work explores identity, resilience, crisis, and constancy.
