Introducing Kufic script

Mabna institution, Shiraz, Iran

July 2022

In July 2022, Somayeh Gholami conducted a workshop at Mabna Institution in Shiraz, Iran, dedicated to introducing participants to the Kufic script, one of the oldest and most significant styles of Islamic calligraphy. Known for its strong geometric structure and angular forms, Kufic script has historically been used in early Quranic manuscripts and architectural decoration, reflecting both artistic precision and cultural depth.

During the workshop, participants were guided through the fundamental principles of Kufic calligraphy, learning how to construct letters using its distinctive linear and balanced composition. The sessions encouraged experimentation with form, proportion, and spatial design, allowing participants to create their own calligraphic works inspired by this historic script.

This workshop provided an opportunity to explore the relationship between tradition and contemporary artistic practice, highlighting the enduring influence of Kufic calligraphy in modern visual art and design.
