For 24 hours, Casa da Cerca, in Almada, is transformed into a space dedicated to drawing, experimentation and creation. The event “Traço Contínuo – 24 horas a desenhar” takes place between 2 pm on Saturday, September 19, and 2 pm on Sunday, the 20th, with activities distributed in different spaces of Casa da Cerca and its gardens.
The initiative proposes a continuous program, with 12 workshops guided by guest artists, which follow one another every two hours, complemented by various activities of free participation.
The program aims to reach both those who already draw and those who have no experience in this area. “We challenge those who draw and, above all, those who think they don’t know how to draw, to join this celebration of the line and discover new ways of looking, imagining and creating!”, says the Câmara de Almada, in a statement.
Among the guest artists are Adriana Molder, Daniel Melim, João Catarino, João Fazenda, Manoel Quitério, Mário Linhares, Mimi Tavares, Pedro Salvador Mendes, Sara Simões, Somayeh Gholami and Susana Lemos. The proposed workshops address different themes, subjects and points of view, exploring various practices and understandings of drawing.
A program that crosses day and night
The program starts at 2 pm on Saturday, with the workshop “From the wall to the fence”, guided by Manoel Quitério. In the Sculpture Park, participants are invited to collaborate in the creation of a mural painting that celebrates drawing, the 25th anniversary of the Botanical Garden and some artistic works related to the history of Casa da Cerca.
At 4 pm, João Fazenda presents “A house of images”, a workshop that starts from the existing images in the galleries and gardens of Casa da Cerca to create posters through the stencil technique. Two hours later, at 6 pm, it is the turn of “Magical Creatures of O Chão das Artes”, by Susana Lemos, which invites participants to discover figures hidden in the landscape through pareidolia, using natural pigments, watercolors and watercolor graffiti.
Between 8 pm and 11 pm, the proposal “Food to draw and eat”, by João Catarino, crosses drawing with tasting. Participants will circulate through an area inside and outside Casa da Cerca, designed from the choices they make for the dish.
From 10 pm to 1 am, Adriana Molder guides “The dawn of Drawing”, a three-hour session designed to create an environment conducive to artistic creation.
During the early hours of Sunday, between 00:00 am and 3:00 am, Mário Linhares directs “In search of the line that speaks”, a nude model drawing session that explores the relationships between line and stain, figure and background and finished and unfinished. This is followed, between 2 am and 5 am, by “Drawing the light”, by Mimi Tavares, which takes participants to explore the garden at night and draw the light of the trees and plants.
Between 4 am and 7 am, Daniel V. Melim presents the “Discoteca do Desenho”, under the theme “The power of plants”. The proposal crosses “sound, dance, plants and drawing” in an exploratory dialogue, with different drawing stations open to participants.
The last hours of the marathon
With the arrival of morning, the program continues with new workshops. Between 6 am and 9 am, Pedro Salvador Mendes guides “Painting the morning light”, inviting participants to observe the variations in light and color of the aurora and record them in watercolors.
At 8 am, Sara Simões proposes “Growing vine”, an activity that will give rise to a collective mural from drawings made on small squares of paper. Between 10 am and 1 pm, “Letras que Desenham”, by Somayeh Gholami, introduces participants to Persian calligraphy, through the Nastaliq and Kufic styles.
The marathon ends with a new session of “From the wall to the fence”, between 11 am and 2 pm, ending the mural started on Saturday.
In addition to the guided workshops, activities will be available that can be carried out autonomously, allowing you to explore different techniques, supports and materials. Among the proposals is the use of a camera to be drawn and the participation in a large collective drawing in the cadavre-exquis style.
Exhibition and performance at the Pool
In parallel, the exhibition “The form is empty”, by Joana da Conceição, will be inaugurated in the old Swimming Pools of São Paulo, located next to Casa da Cerca. The exhibition can be visited between 2 pm on Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday.
The same space receives, on Sunday, September 20, between 6:30 am and 8 am, a performance by Joana Conceição, with André Abel, Jorge Martins and Marta Ângela. The intervention was designed to explore the acoustic characteristics of the building, taking advantage of the sound and light of the sunrise.
With the “Continuous Trace” initiative, it is intended to affirm Casa da Cerca as “a space for reflection and experimentation around drawing”, covering different ways of working with this practice, “from an apparently childish scribble to the abstract line of expanded drawing”, through nude drawing, landscape and drawing as a strategy of thought, underlines the Câmara de Almada.
Throughout the 24 hours, the proposals will cross “body, nature, light and sound”, providing different drawing experiences to the participants.
