Persian calligraphy artwork by Somayeh Gholami

Description: Sometimes, You Need to Change Your Phase is a contemporary Kufic calligraphy painting that brings together calligraphy, mathematics, geometry, and visual abstraction. The work reflects my background as both a calligrapher and a mathematician, creating a dialogue between written language and mathematical structure.

Part of my PhD thesis in Applied Mathematics appears in the background of the painting, transforming mathematical writing into a layer of visual information. Over this background, a single word is repeatedly written in different directions. Through repetition, rotation, and geometric arrangement, the word forms a structured pattern inspired by the visual language of Iranian tiles and traditional Persian geometric ornamentation.

The mathematical text and the Kufic forms exist together as two different systems of structure. One is based on mathematical notation and reasoning; the other is based on the geometry and rhythm of the Arabic and Persian alphabet. Their combination creates a contemporary interpretation of both mathematics and calligraphy.

The title, Sometimes, You Need to Change Your Phase, refers to the idea of transformation and transition. In mathematics, a phase can describe a state or position within a system; in life, changing phase can mean entering a different state, direction, or way of seeing.

Through contemporary Kufic calligraphy, geometric repetition, and mathematical text, the work explores how apparently different systems can come together to create a new visual language.
